African oil palm

Large solitary palm that can grow to 20 m tall. The upper portion of the trunk is surrounded by persistent leaf bases. The fruits are borne between the leaf stems. They are 3 to 5 cm in diameter, and red to black when ripe. They contain a commercially valuable oil. A native of tropical West Africa, it was introduced in the Philippines and is used both as ornamental and for oil production in some areas.
