A small tree that can grow to 15 m high, often with a crooked trunk. The leaves are spirally arranged. The flowers are small, pale yellow and fragrant. The fruit is a kidney-shaped nut hanging under a yellow, fleshy, and edible receptacle. Originally from tropical America, it was introduced in the Philippines during the early Spanish period, and is now widely planted for its fruit or as an ornamental.
