Medium-sized tree that grows to 20 m, with a buttressed base and horizontal branches. The palmate leaves have 5 to 9 leaflets. They are shed after flowering. The flowers are large, creamy white and fragrant. The fruit is up to 15 cm long, and contains seeds embedded in woolly fibers. A native of tropical America, it is now widespread in the Philippines.
