Bagras

Bagras, Mindanao gum, Rainbow gum
Eucalyptus deglupta
Myrtaceae

Tall tree that can grow up to 70 m in height. The leaves are up to 15 cm long and slightly aromatic when crushed. The flowers are small and white. Patches of the outer bark are shed regularly, showing the bright-green inner bark. This then matures to give blue, purple, orange and then maroon tones. It is a native of Mindanao and parts of Indonesia, the only eucalyptus of the Northern hemisphere. It is planted as ornamental in the Philippines (but not common) and for pulpwood plantations, the dominant species used for that purpose in the country.

One tree stands on Ormoc near the corner of Laoag.
