Evergreen tree that grows to 20 meters. The leaves are glossy dark green above, rusty brown underneath. The flowers are small along the leaf stems. The fruit is round, fleshy and edible, with 8 flat seeds. A native of tropical America, it was introduced during the early Spanish period. It is widely planted in the Philippines.
