Aratiles

Aratiles, Datiles, Ratiles
Muntingia calabura
Elaeocarpaceae

A small, fast-growing tree with spreading branches to 10 m in height. The leaves are hairy, up to 12 cm long. The flowers are white and the fruit is round, fleshy, red when ripe, and edible. A native of tropical America, it was introduced to the Philippines during Spanish times for its sweet fruit, and is now naturalized and widely planted in the country.
