Firetree




Firetree, Flame tree, Flamboyant
Delonix regia
Leguminosae

Tree that grows to 15 m or more. The leaves are doubly compound to 30 cm long with small leaflets. The leaves are shed prior to flowering. The beautiful flowers are red or orange, to 12 cm across. The flat pods are 50 cm long. A native to Madagarcar, introduced to the Philippines in early Spanish times. Widely planted throughout the country. As the roots can be somewhat destructive it should not be planted near walls or houses.
